Drop catching economics: is the retail-margin story still real?

Domain Expiry & Drop Catching · Question · started

The classic argument: catch drops at reg fee, sell at a retail multiple, and the margin carries the misses. With more professional catching operations and registrars holding expired inventory longer, does that arithmetic still work for a solo investor in 2026? Where do you still find consistent margin: specific TLD niches, specific name patterns, or specific seller types?

The consistent margin I observe is in patterns, not luck: - Two-word .com combinations where the first word is a current industry verb (verify, onboard, hedge) and the second is an asset noun. - Aged registrations with clean history: no drops in the registry record, real DNS history, no spam blocklist entries. The age premium persists because it cannot be faked cheaply. - Country-code niches where the incumbent registrars are slow to relist expired inventory. The catching side is effectively a race to automation. A solo buyer competes on selectivity, not speed: choose the drops the professional operations systematically ignore because the volumes are too small for them.
